Job Description
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

This position participates with management and engineering to establish objectives, plans, and timelines for the development of comprehensive technical documents such as procedure manuals, operational specifications, training manuals, presentations, articles and related technical publications. Reviews and negotiates document specifications with customers and ensures final documents clearly and effectively communicate technical information and data. Reviews product systems, functional specifications and operations, and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems. Investigates and analyzes project requirements and complex operating problems and develops recommended solutions to meet company governmental safety and performance standards. Investigates and resolves problem areas and collaborates with engineering, operations and maintenance personnel to document technical solutions. Leads the development of and monitors the implementation of technical documentation policies, practices, and standards. Acts as a spokesperson on matters related to technical documentation. Provides direction and guidance to less experienced professional or technical staff. May make recommendations to management on short and long term planning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates with management and the customer to determine appropriate timelines, content, and format for the development of comprehensive engineering technical documents.
  • Leads the identification, collection, and analysis of appropriate technical information and data.
  • Reads, interprets and analyzes engineering source material such as engineering drawings, software documents, test plans, design specifications/documents, and interviews with technical experts.
  • Analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system procedures and design and system failure modes to recommend technical manual procedures which control or eliminate hazards.
  • Develops safe procedures as required to support customer and test/operational requirements.
  • Evaluates the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements.
  • Reviews human interface designs, and provides recommendations for human interface improvements to ensure practicability, safety and usability.
  • Collaborates with engineering teams to resolve technical/operational issues.
  • Serves as a specialist to management and customer by leading technical documentation reviews and making customer related presentations as required.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating practices and procedures.
  • Additional Functions: Other duties as assigned or required.

  • Typically requires education or formal training equivalent to the completion of a bachelor's degree and five or more years of professional engineering/military technical and/or documentation experience. Equivalent professional engineering/military technical, operations, and/or maintenance experience may be substituted in lieu of education/training.
  • Must demonstrate an excellent understanding of military and/or commercial systems, a strong working knowledge of the engineering development process, and an understanding of logistic support analysis and principles.
  • Must possess:
    • The ability to develop, acquire, interpret and communicate engineering technical data.
    • The ability to develop and communicate new concepts and apply them in an evolving environment.
    • The ability to organize, schedule and coordinate work phases and determine the appropriate approach at the task or project level.
    • The ability to identify issues and develop innovative solutions to a variety of complex technical problems.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to accurately analyze, document, present and report recommendations.
    • Excellent knowledge of computer operations and applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance is required.
