Job Title: Teacher Assistant (School-Based)

Location: Elizabeth City, NC
Work Setting: In-person (school-based)
Reports To: Special Education Coordinator and/or Classroom Teacher

Position Summary

We’re hiring a dedicated Teacher Assistant to provide instructional and behavioral support to students under the direction of certified teaching staff. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with children, helping students meet academic and social-emotional goals, and contributing to a safe, positive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support teachers with daily instruction and classroom routines
  • Assist with implementation of IEPs and student support plans
  • Provide small-group and 1:1 instructional support as assigned
  • Supervise students during transitions, recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal, and other school activities
  • Reinforce classroom expectations and positive behavior strategies
  • Support students with special needs, including academic tasks, self-regulation, and daily living skills as needed
  • Help prepare, organize, and maintain instructional materials and classroom resources
  • Communicate student progress, behavior, and needs to the teacher/team
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Participate in training and professional development as directed

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required (Associate’s degree or higher preferred)
  • Experience working with children (school, childcare, coaching, camps, etc.) preferred
  • Special education experience is a plus, but not required
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Patient, reliable, flexible, and student-centered
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow school policies
  • Comfortable supporting students across school settings (classroom, cafeteria, playground, etc.)
