Job Title:
Library Clerk

Position Function: Performs a wide variety of duties in the library some of which are confidential in nature. Works directly with students and staff within the library.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Performs the full range of circulation desk procedures using our automated circulation system; Destiny
  • Generate reports, produce fine and lost item notices, have the ability to maintain student and staff records and the knowledge of how to successfully update their information if there is an error on their record, college funds, for fines and overdue materials
  • Check-in new resources that have been ordered and received; process new material, based on district guidelines, so that it is ready to be shelved; inventory the collection as directed by Library Media Services using the scanner and Destiny system
  • Possess knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and be able to sort and shelve materials and keep the items on the shelves in the correct order
  • Basic research skills needed to teach students and staff how to access materials and information
  • Maintain a list of needed supplies and resources that can be used when ordering
  • Work with teachers and staff to establish the library schedule
  • Assist students and staff in locating resources in the library and the use of online resources
  • Knowledge of basic requirements for a research paper in an effort to provide assistance to the classroom teacher
  • Help monitor students using the library
  • Maintain a system of communication and effective relationships with other staff and students, including a basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook
  • Compiles a variety of statistics concerning library usage and book circulation and maintain library records accurately and in a timely fashion
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair technical issues with copiers, printers, computers, projectors, SMARTboard, etc. that are located in the Library Media Center
  • Conduct or assist with the book fair by collecting money and/or assisting patrons, setting up and dismantling the displays
  • Continually look to update technical knowledge by participating in professional development opportunities and reading technical magazines and websites, maintaining professional learning networks
  • Willingness to learn and teach others new computer teaks such as Excel, Word, Web 2.0 resources, Google Tools, and other reference sites such as Citation Machine

Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned.

Equipment: This position may require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with USD 259's guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Some travel within district may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Work at a computer, bend, stoop, twist, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Work in standard office and school building environments
  • Additional demands upon request of Supervisor

  • Intermediate computer proficiency and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, which will be determined and validated by testing
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, laminators, etc.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using research, analyzing, and previous precedent for similar problems
  • Ability to provide the highest level customer service
  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team situation
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks, change assignments on short notice, perform effectively under deadlines and work in a calm efficient manner

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position

Qualification Profile:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working with children preferred
  • A minimum of 6 months experience working in an office environment preferred
