Objective/Program Overview

The purpose of this internship is to provide interns with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to transition to full time employment as a United Airlines Information Technology Analyst. The training program is designed to provide new employees with the opportunity to learn, the people, the process and the culture. Through this process they will also demonstrate their skills, which will allow United Airlines to better understand what developmental training is needed. (Note: The objective of the program is to provide full time employment to all interns who meet training objectives and receive positive performance appraisals. However, an offer of full-time employment is not guaranteed.)

 Job Description:

In the analyst role, you will be responsible for performing detailed requirements analysis, documenting processes, crafting user stories, triage issues, facilitating meetings analyzing data and/or support functional/user acceptance testing. To succeed in this role, you should be familiar with Agile scrum software development methodologies, have the ability to write great user stories and have a natural analytical way of thinking/problem solving and be able to explain difficult concepts to both technical and non-technical users.

•          Works on one or more projects both moderate to complex projects and manages projects of a limited scope

•          Requires moderate guidance to manage work and time

•          Assist in planning and design of solutions via requirements gathering

•          Clearly document, communicate and maintain requirements/user stories and solutions and associated analysis

•          Create simple workflow models and process maps based on input from multiple sources

•          Lead and facilitate meetings with Technology and Business Partners to gather needs and requirements, solutions, plans, estimates and troubleshooting

•          Identifies problems/issues and finds solutions

Training Specifics

On the Job Training: The training program is designed to provide interns with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to transition into full time employment with United Airlines as an Analyst – Information Technology. Interns will receive a combination of on the job, classroom setting and computer-based training. Interns who demonstrate satisfactory completion of training objectives and receive positive performance reviews are considered for full-time employment at one of United Airline’s offices.

Professional Development: To enable all candidates to have long term, successful post-military careers, United provides, in partnership with RecruitMilitary, employment skill training and professional development coaching for all participating interns. This portion of the program includes participation in professional development seminars, close work with mentors and practical applications to ensure all interns are armed with the requisite knowledge skills and abilities to develop and manage a successful civilian career after military service. Developmental topics include:

·       Creating resumes targeted to specific opportunities in specific fields of employment.

·       Leveraging social media to effectively network in the digital environment for career success.

·       Development of a coherent personal brand to effectively advance career development.

·       Use of digital and online tools for networking.

·       Development of skills necessary to secure, prepare for and succeed at job interviews and subsequent salary negotiations.

 Skills, Requirements, & Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience in Computer Science, Information Systems or Business Administration
  • 3-5+ years of IT and/or business experience, or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training
  • Communication Skills- The ability to communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of employees and management, capable of successful formal and informal communication, speaks and writes clearly and understandably at the right level
  • Integrity and Trust - Involves being widely trusted, being seen as a direct, truthful individual, can present the unvarnished truth in an appropriate and helpful manner, keeps confidences, admits mistakes, and doesn’t misrepresent him/herself for personal gain

Work Environment

This job operates in an office environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines, etc. Interns should be prepared to be exposed occasionally to adverse terrain, weather, and potential noise hazards when traveling to operations-focused locations. Interns are expected to adhere to safe work standards and PPE requirements as applicable. Training may occur at more than one physical location. To enable the intern to have the best experience, United Airlines may provide lodging to interns at zero cost. Additionally, United Airlines is prepared to provide space available air travel in support on internship program participation, on a case-by-case basis.

Delivery of Training:

All training will be delivered under the direct supervision and guidance of the Manager – Information technology, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience. Training will also be supported by members of the Information Technology Team, each with 3-5 years’ experience.

Performance Assessment Rubric

Satisfactory completion of each training task culminates with a demonstration of proficiency in each task. Level of proficiency will be assessed according to the following four measures.

Familiar (FAM): Intern can clearly articulate a basic understanding of all assigned tasks.

Capable of Assisting (COA): Intern is capable of rendering significant assistance to a qualified Maintenance Technician in the performance of all tasks.

Capable with Assistance and/or Supervision (CAS): Intern is capable of performing assigned tasks with supervision and some hands-on assistance.

Independently Capable (INC): Intern is capable of performing tasks with supervision and without supervision or assistance.

Interns will be assessed in 3 blocks: following the first 3rd of their internship, following the second third of their internship and finally, at the end of the internship. At the first assessment 100% of tasks must be assessed FAM with 25% assessed as CAO. At the second assessment 100% of tasks must be assessed as COA with 50% assessed as CAS. At the final assessment 75% of all tasks must be assessed as INC with not more than 25% assessed as CAS. Interns who meet these criteria while also adhering to United Airlines standards of Work and all associated Safety Protocols can expect to receive an offer of employment.

Attendance:

•       Time off must be requested in advance and is at the discretion of the intern’s supervisor.

•       Interns are strongly encouraged to attend all professional development seminars and coaching sessions.

•       Interns are not obligated to work in excess of 40 hours per week.

•       Interns with excessive or unexcused absences may be subject to termination at the discretion of the employer and/or RecruitMilitary Program Manager.

•       The employer may terminate the intern at any time for failing to demonstrate progressive achievement of training objectives as well as violation of company policy to include but not limited to safety standards, personal conduct and drug free workplace.

Benefits upon Full Time Hire (subject to change):

•       Salary Band: $79,900 to $108,790.

Instructor Qualification: Throughout the internship period, interns will be partnered with a qualified and experienced information technology professional.

Instructional Model: Interns will receive a majority of their training in the corporate setting with job shadowing and on the job training (OJT). Additional classroom instruction and computer-based training may be used to supplement OJT.

Training Outcome: Interns who demonstrate the ability to independently perform the full spectrum of tasks associated with the role of Analyst-Information Technology, while adhering to all applicable standards of work and who additionally have conducted themselves in a disciplined and professional manner throughout the course of their internship should expect to receive an offer of full-time employment.
