About the role:

Admiral Business is seeking a Commercial Motor Underwriter to support the technical and commercial development of our motor portfolio. Reporting to the Motor Underwriting Manager, you’ll act as a technical expert and key contact for brokers and customers, playing a central role in risk selection, pricing and underwriting strategy. You’ll help shape underwriting appetite, refine product design and drive profitable portfolio growth within a growing commercial lines business, redefining motor insurance through data, technology and underwriting excellence

Key Responsibilities:

Shape & develop the commercial motor portfolio

  • Underwrite and target commercial motor risks across a range of products (including minifleet, fleet, taxi, salary sacrifice, commercial van and others to follow).
  • Aid the technical development and performance management of the commercial motor lines including single vehicle and fleet.
  • Help create underwriting appetite, guidelines and pricing frameworks for commercial motor risks, ensuring alignment with Admiral Business strategy.
  • Collaborate with Product, Pricing, Distribution and Operations teams to evolve the commercial motor propositions in line with customer and market needs.

Drive underwriting excellence

  • Help lead broker relations to target business within our underwriting appetite.
  • Ensure all underwriting activity aligns with governance, compliance and risk appetite standards.
  • Provide training, coaching and mentorship to underwriting assistants to enhance capability and consistency within the team.
  • Maintain and develop strong working relationships with brokers, partners and other key stakeholders.

Support growth & commercial outcomes

  • Feedback on business volumes and current market conditions to identify opportunities for expansion and optimisation.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, loss ratios and trends to inform underwriting decisions and product strategy.
  • Collaborate with Data and Pricing teams to refine risk selection and improve portfolio profitability.
  • Represent Admiral Business to brokers to enhance brand visibility and expertise.

Innovation, data & continuous improvement

  • Embrace automation, AI and digital tools to improve underwriting efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and enhance customer and partner experiences.
  • Drive a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across the Motor Underwriting function.

Essential Skills: 

  • Experience in Commerical Motor underwriting to price new business, renewals and mid term changes.
  • Technical expert: strong understanding of rating models and regulatory considerations within the commercial motor sector
  • Commercially astute: proven ability to balance technical underwriting discipline with commercial decision-making.

Desirable Skills:

  • Collaborative leader: team player who supports others, communicates effectively and works cross-functionally to deliver shared goals.
  • Data-driven: skilled in using data and analytics to inform underwriting and portfolio performance.
  • Innovative mindset: excited by new technologies and ways of working that simplify and enhance underwriting processes.
