Job Summary

JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal, Elementary

QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in administration or currently enrolled in a State of Alabama approved program

REPORTS TO: Principal

ANNUAL CALENDAR DAYS: 207 days (10 months)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Principal serves as a professional instructional and administrative leader of the school. Working under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal collaborates with staff, students, families, and the community to ensure a high-quality educational program aligned with the school’s mission. The Assistant Principal assists the Principal in establishing and maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive environment characterized by high expectations for staff and students.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Leadership

  • Assist in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional program.
  • Conduct classroom observations and assist with teacher evaluations in academic areas.
  • Maintain documentation of classroom observations and evaluations.
  • Assist in providing professional learning opportunities and staff development.
  • Coordinate, design, and support in-service and professional development activities.
  • Support the design and implementation of the Mentor Program and orientation for new personnel.
  • Plan and pursue personal professional growth while demonstrating professional ethics.

Student Services and School Climate

  • Assist in ensuring appropriate student placement and access to services.
  • Handle student discipline.
  • Monitor and support student attendance.
  • Coordinate 504 plans and the Problem-Solving Team.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly school environment conducive to learning.
  • Promote and sustain a climate of high expectations for all students.

Operations, Management, and Compliance

  • Assist in interpreting and enforcing federal and state laws, as well as state and local Board policies.
  • Assist the Principal with personnel functions, including assignments and supervision of duties.
  • Assist in securing, maintaining, and managing material resources.
  • Assist in preparing and administering the school budget and supervising school finances.
  • Assist with master scheduling, bell schedules, and lunch schedules.
  • Coordinate substitute teachers and supervise office aides.
  • Prepare and update teacher and student handbooks.
  • Coordinate school pictures and student activities.

Supervision and Programs

  • Supervise athletics and extracurricular activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise assemblies and school programs.
  • Assist with the Summer School program.
  • Supervise transportation, buildings and grounds, and state textbook programs.
  • Coordinate inventories and fixed assets.
  • Coordinate keys, security, and school safety procedures.
  • Coordinate police and school relations.

Additional Duties

  • Supervise activities and assigned programs as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
