Within the Finance Department, several specialized departments contribute to its overall mission: Controller, Revenue Management, Strategic Sourcing, Tax, Treasury, and Strategic Studies. Each department is vital in managing BNSF's financial health and strategic financial planning. These departments work collaboratively to secure BNSF's economic stability and support its growth and innovation within the railway industry. This is a full-time position located in Fort Worth, TX. For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely. Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected. Travel is minimal, less than 10%. This is a position in the BNSF tax department primarily focused on sales and use tax compliance. The position is responsible for the day-to-day management of all sales/use tax compliance functions for BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) and subsidiary companies. Reporting directly to the Director of Taxes (Sales and Use Taxes), this position will be directly involved in the preparation, filing and remittance of sales/use tax returns with the various local, state, and provincial authorities to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. In addition, this position will support the sales/use tax audit and appeal process. Responsibilities

  • Support and assist the Director of Taxes (Sales & Use) to effectively manage communications with the Accounting Department on matters such as cash flow, account reconciliation, tax accrual, and monthly journal entries.
  • Work with other departments on sales and use tax questions related to materials and services that BNSF purchases.
  • Communicate with vendors and work closely with partners in Strategic Sourcing.
  • Work with Technology Services to ensure that ONESOURCE, the sales and use tax compliance engine, is functioning properly through SAP and other data and reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with others on the tax team to support state tax policy and legislative issues, identify efficiency and productivity initiatives, and identify strategic initiatives.

Requirements

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or tax.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in finance related field, preferably in corporate tax and/or accounting.
  • Strong background in GAAP accounting.
  • Experience with data analytic tools, like Alteryx, Power BI, and other similar tools.
  • Strong research skills and be able to demonstrate effective communication, problem solving and computer skills. The ability to comprehend highly technical material and to think creatively is essential.
  • Strong leadership skills to lead by influencing, inspiring and motivating others.
  • Deep understanding of the business. Strong relationships with others across the business. Curiosity and focus to dig deep to solve problems.

  • Sales/use tax compliance, SAP and ONESOURCE experience.
